18 weeks to go..

Hello chaps! Rick here..

Just dawning on us now that we've only got 18 weeks to go of training before the race kicks off...

Trainings been a big slow, with exams, and injuries, but hopefully in the next week or so that will all be behind us, and we can properly crack on..

I've been really struggling to overcome an ankle injury, but I'm hoping to be fully running in the next 3-4 weeks.. so my training plan will be something like this over the summer months..

Monday - (am) Weightlifting session
(pm) 6-8 mile jog with weighted backpack

Tuesday - Cycling Machine - 45 minutes (high intensity)
Stepper Machine - 45 minutes (low - medium intensity)
Treadmill - 1 hour walking (high incline work)

Wednesday - Weightlifting session

Thursday - Cycling Machine - 45 minutes (high intensity)
Stepper Machine - 45 minutes (low - medium intensity)
Treadmill - 1 hour walking (high incline work)

Friday - Swimming - 30 lengths of 20m pool

Saturday - 15-20 mile jog/walk (with weighted backpack)

Sunday - REST

We will also be throwing in some 30-40 milers when we get the chance during the summer, and plan on getting up to the lake district for some challenging trails..

We've been told that it's difficult to run in the jungle with the terrain the way it is, and the only chance we will get will be around 50-60 miles into it, when we get to the beaches, but by this time we will be in tatters no doubt, so the likelihood of running won't be great.. however, we will give it our best shot :)

Phil will be following a similar schedule, with most likely a bit more emphasis on running rather than gym work, however, he's going to have to throw a few more swimming sessions in as he's a week swimmer.

We will begin updating the blog more frequently, with hopefully some pictures!

keep well,

Rick

Training REALLY begins!

Hey guys!

Been a hectic few months at Uni, so not really had a chance to post on here!

Anyhow, my ankle injury still isn't 100% better, and I'm currently working very hard on the wobble boards, resistance bands and various stretches to get back into running..

Phil on the other hand has began running, and has been covering distances of around 3-6 miles a few times a week.

We're hoping that by next term, I'll have had a few weeks of 'base' fitness work, and we can get out on the roads for the 10 week term, and really push on, bearing in mind however that we've still got ALL summer to train!

In the mean time however, I've purchased a bike, and will be doing some cycling hoping to increase my fitness levels, as well as rock climbing, rowing and swimming!

lastly, a HUGE thanks to everyone who's donated, will be donating or who has helped us in our quest for sponsorship, particularly The Lancashire Evening Post, SCAN and Erin Royale.

Training begins! (After Christmas)

Hello Chaps! Rick here. We've agreed to begin training after Christmas, gives us both a chance to pack on a few more pounds (which we will be needing, I assure you..) and for me to recover fully from my ankle injury, that's been the bane of my life for the last 6-7 months or so..

In the first month of training we will be slowly increasing our distances, most likely starting at around the 5 mile mark, hopefully in the last week of the month hitting a few 10 miler's. This will hopefully help us avoid injuries such as shin splints, as well as Phil's mysterious 'foot' pains he endured in Newquay.

After the first month, when we've got back into the swing of things (seeing as I haven't been on a proper run in far too long), we will be picking it up dramatically. We will be trying to fit in 3 or 4 larger distance (12-15miles) runs a week, often over 'horrible' terrain, this will help increase our endurance, which we will be needing in the Jungle. We will try and maintain this throughout next term, then when we return for Summer term (after a few weeks of much needed rest) we will once again push harder, hopefully covering between 80-100 miles a week.

This will give us an excuse to be eating well over 5000 calories a day (Something I nearly already do, but Phil's a soft arse, and only consumes around 2500...)

Anyways, I'm sure we will have lots of pictures of us Sand Dune running coming in the next month or so.

Phil has proposed we go to the Lakes for a week training during the Christmas Holiday. I really, really don't want to, he may touch me.

No Going Back

Alright guys this is Phil actually writing a post. Yesterday (after much frustration) me and baron paid our first deposit, which is non refundable ensuring that we actually are going to this race. this has prompted us to join various facebook groups and watching videos on youtube. we looked at each picture and video with an increasingly worried look on our faces. from the extreme bites and injuries on peoples legs to the man in tears declaring that he 'wasn't a quitter' as he crossed the finishing line i don't think the enormity of the event has or will be realised until we get there. Then there is the heat that we also connot possibly prepare adequatley for. from the sounds of this piece it sounds like that we are having a few reservations about this trip. This however could not be further from the truth, both me and Rick cant wait to go and start some serious training (around 70-100 miles p/w), and Rick is going to try and sort us out with some training (inside the studios at gym he works at) that will go someway to creating the humidity we will be enduring throughout this run.
there will be more updates and perhaps pictures of our preperation
cheers!

Donations!

Hey everyone, we've decided to set up a link so any kind people can donate :) ANY amount of money will be brilliant, even if its just 50p, it will be split between a cause that helps support and maintain the Amazon and surrounding areas eco-systems, and the MS Society (multiple sclerosis).

Thanks guys!

''The most dangerous race on earth'' - ITV

First time I've/We've ever done one of these!

HIYA! I'm Rick, I presume it will be myself writing the majority of these posts due to Harvey genuinely believing there are only 2 good things in the world, Bitter and, well, I wont go into the other one...The 'other thing' will be taking up the majority of his time though trust me, and thus, you're stuck with me.

We are currently entered into the Jungle Marathon. It takes place in the Amazon Rain forest in South America, and lasts for 6 days, covering 200km. On one of those days we will have to smash out nearly 60miles in one session! Although the distance doesn't sound too extreme (Its around 130miles), the main problem will be the terrain and the humidity! We will be forced to walk the majority of it (most likely 60%), and anybody who knows Phil Harvey, will assure you that I will want to get this race over and done with as quickly as possible!

Phil is adamant we can't win it, I feel otherwise. I believe if we come in with good times on the first 4 stages, which are only around 12miles each on average, then we have a good chance. I'm going to let him set the pace for the first 4 seeing as hes quicker over shorter distances. I however have the endurance, and shall be pace making on the longer stretches. Aslong as we dont come in last on the 60miler, then winning the thing is a possibility. We've already set ourselves the aim of not being in the Jungle during the night (most runners will spend some part of the race in the dark, especially on the 60miler as theres only around 10-11 hours of sunlight a day). When it goes dark in the Jungle, apparently it comes to life, and all the insects, animals etc come out hunting, I'm sure the thought of this will be keeping our legs moving! In fact, Tarantulas come out at night! So, yes, I will not be stopping for a rest. Even if Harveys feet are hurting like they were in the sea in Newquay when we went Surfing last year, soft arse.

We will also have to contend with Piranha, Anacondas, Vampire Bats (I did not know these existed until recently, but they carry RABIES, and they can bite you, and you wouldn't realise for 30minutes!)...There are also silly amounts of spiders (my biggest fear) and snakes (Harvey's biggest fear), as well as Monkeys! We've been warned, at night, if we hear the monkeys screaming, it means there are Jaguars around, and perhaps a few wild boars!

Each year around 60-90 people enter the race, and in December (I think) there is a documentary about it, so get watching people!

Anyways, the whole trip will cost around 2500-3000 each. We've agreed to put up a large proportion of this amount each, with the rest going to a charity we will think about the race is coming up. Our entry fee (£1600 each) will also go towards helping the inhabitants of the Amazon Rain Forest.

We aren't asking for money on this site, that was not the aim of setting it up. But obviously, any donations would be most welcome and would be put towards a good cause :)

I will be adding more info along the way.

Cheers!

Rick and Phil
